Christian Love Songs

Love, marriage and relationships are not explored very often in Christian Music. In fact, after I got engaged, I ended up writing 3 songs for my fiancé as it was difficult to find songs that were appropriate. After many years and listening to many songs, I feel this is an area that Christian Music artists should explore, as getting priorities right from a Christian perspective is so important in a relationship. This is also an area where different moods can be expressed - from seriousness to fun. Marriage is a multi-faceted part of life and the Bible is filled with references to make this the most beautiful aspect of life.

How Did I Choose These Songs?

As I sit here typing on my laptop, I am just choosing 3 songs that I listen to very often, know most of the lyrics for and also play for my wife when we are alone. I really don't have a scoring system for them or a popularity scale. This is just a personal choice of songs from me. There are many others that have just dropped off my playlist for some reason or the other - not that they are bad, but its just something that happens over time.

I've included the music videos from youtube in this article, so you can listen to them as you read. They also have the lyrics which you may find thought-provoking. Don't forget the 10 second poll at the very bottom!

No. 1: Thank God I Got Her - Jonny Diaz

I stumbled on this song when I was listening to one of my favourites when I was going through a rough patch in my life - a song called "Breathe" by Jonny Diaz. Youtube threw this song as a 'next song' and the lyrics and tune caught my eyes and ears and heart and has stayed there since then. Its a little fun and whole lot of truth that seem to be the kind of song I would write too (if I ever wrote one again!). The song explores some of the funny things that we say women do (cry for TV, have multiple pillows, nothing-to-wear moments) and say "I don't get her, but thank God I got her" - a subtle twist on words to bring out a beautiful love song.

No.2: Made For Me - TobyMac

TobyMac is a Christian artist who has stayed relevant to all ages through more than 3 decades, starting from his early days in DC Talk. His songs appeal a lot to youngsters and I love it that he throws this beautiful and lively love song into his album, 'Eyes On It'.

Now Toby has had a beautiful love story in real life too and has been married for Amanda since 1994 with 5 children (5 little Jamaricans!). The song draws strong contrasts in their ways, manners and things they like (Eg. 'I love sunsets but she likes sunrise, I’m always running late and she’s always on time'). It then concludes saying ‘Cause she was made for me, You gave her to me'. You here refers to God.

No. 3: I will be here - Steven Curtis Chapman

This is an older song by veteran Christian music singer Steven Curtis Chapman and is probably the more 'serious' song on my list. It was a par of the 1990 album, "More to This Life". It has also featured in multiple other compilation albums and is an all time favorite in Christian love song and wedding song compilations.

Steven too has had a long marriage spanning several decades. They have a large family with both biological and adopted children. They lost one of their children to a home accident in tragic circumstances and both mention that this was a tough time in their marriage and their lives.

This song has a lot of depth and scripture references and talks about steadfast love, the seriousness of the vows and lifes many ups and downs. I know several friends who have sung this on their wedding reception. In fact it was one of the first songs I sent my fiance (an mp3 by email!).

So that's my brief list. You can probably listen to dozens of other Christian love songs. Do comment with your favorites.
