After you have established that your child may have some form of autism, the next step is getting them the help they need.
You need to set up an appointment with your child's primary care physician to get a referral to a specialist. This specialist determines what form of autism your child has. Yes, there are many different categories of autism. This process takes awhile.
Ideally, you want to catch this as early as possible. Your primary care physician will be able to tell the delays in development, thus referring your child at a very young age to specialist.

Once your child's primary care physician has determined there is a delay, and you have been referred to a specialist. There are a couple things, first you may be put on a waiting list to see a specialist. Second, there are other avenues you can take in getting your child tested for autism.
If your child is under the age of three, there are programs that your child qualifies for for early detection and treatments right in your home.
All you have to do is contact your local school, and ask them about it. You can also talk to your child's primary care physician about this, and you can get more specific information specifically for your area.
