Uranus in astrology is the planet that rules over the zodiac Aquarius. This planet in astrology represents technology, inventions/scientific breakthroughs, change and rebellion. Uranus is a generational or trans-personal planet.

Pluto and Neptune are also generational/trans-personal planets. Generational or transpersonal planets affect a group of people more on a group or generational level than on an individual level. Even so, they affect people both on individual and group levels. Usually members of the same age group or generation share the same Uranus, Pluto and Neptune signs. Uranus is also an outer planet.

As mentioned in my Pluto astrology hub, an outer planet in astrology is a planet that moves slower than other planets in one’s natal chart, since its further from the Sun and earth. Uranus is the seventh planet from the sun. Mercury, the Moon, and the Sun move relatively quicker than an outer planet or generational planet in astrology. For example the Sun in astrology passes through the earth in about 30 days (aka the time period of a sun or zodiac sign), while an outer planet such as Pluto passes through Earth for a period of 248 years.

Uranus takes 84 years to travel around the sun, this 84 years is divided into 7 years in each zodiac sign. This time period in a sense spans a generation or a half of a generation. A generational planet is similar to how we divide up generations in history. An example would be the Baby Boomers and Generation X. The Baby Boomers were the generation born after World War II and came to age during the Hippie era (born between 1946-1964).

While Generation X is known as the MTV Generation, born between the mid 1960s- the early 1980s). These two different generations have both a span between 15- 20 years and they both have unique characteristics that define their generation and differentiate it from different generations. So like a generation, generational planets of astrology each show a group of zodiac signs that represents a generation.

While as, trans-personal planets affect individuals and the group. On an individual level they relate to a person’s spirituality, and consciousness. On a group level they affect the group consciousness and are ideas and values that a group can share and aspire to hold.

Uranus has two glyph's (symbols). One glyph symbol is the combination of the sun and mars symbols. This glyph is supposed to symbolize a drive over the spirit (which is the circle) that surrounded a seed of potential. The second glyph symbol is a cross with two lines on both sides that form an H for the discoverer’s last name (Herschel, William Herschel). There is also a circle in the bottom. This symbol means insight.

Uranus rules over the eleventh house. The eleventh house is the house of friendships, hopes, dreams, and destiny. The eleventh house also governs step, adopted and foster children. It’s the types of friends we make throughout our lives. It’s the clubs, groups, or organizations we belong to. The types of friends and people we meet. What type of friends we are? How we act in friendships? What we offer and give? It also represents our strength in numbers. How we band together with friends to help our dreams flourish and grow? We often think our dreams are singular and don’t involve others, but often times dreams and aspirations do involve others. If we have a dream to own a business, we need donors, we need people willing to give money. Who else will be more willing to help than our friends?

Astrology is very much about mythology and history and with Uranus, it isn’t any different. Uranus in ancient Greek mythology represented the heavens and the sky. The Roman Equivalent is Caelus. Uranus is the human form or the personification of Father Sky. In the Roman tradition, Caelus (Uranus) is the father of Saturn and Terra is his mother.

Going back to Greek mythology Uranus’s mother was Gaia or Mother Earth in Greek mythology. Aether, god of upper air, was rumored to be Uranus’s father, but he is often seen as being conceived by Gaia alone. Gaia is also Uranus’s wife (yes his mother is his wife in Greek mythology). Gaia and Uranus were the parents of the first generation of Titians, powerful deities that ruled over the Earth. The Titians were later overthrown by the Olympians, a race of younger gods.

To get back to Uranus as stated above represents technology, inventions/scientific breakthroughs, change and rebellion. Uranus was discovered in 1781 by William Herschel. During this time we saw the Industrial Revolution, new discoveries, technology such as electricity. We also saw breakthroughs in medical and artistic fields, new information about the nervous system and mental disorders and the Romantic art and literature movement. Uranus is the planet of genius is said to be a higher octave of Mercury.

Uranus is progressive, radical erratic and unpredictable energy known for times of revolution, political unrest and duress and the breakdown of societal structures and traditions. On one end of the spectrum. Uranus represents freedom, individuality, progress, human achievement, originality, creativity and gifts of humanity. On the other end of the spectrum Uranus represents sudden unexpected violence and catastrophes, rebellion, and revolution. Uranus is said to ruled natural disasters, and earthquakes.

Uranus can represent the triumphs and pitfalls of society and its ultimate planetary goal is the creation of an ideal utopian society. Anywhere Uranus is placed in a natal chart represents the individual and collective struggles to break free, find new ways to reinvent and establish an identity, and to help humanity. Uranus is strongly humanitarian and focuses on human deeds and achievements in society and the world.

This concludes Astrology: Uranus Part One. In my Astrology: Uranus Part Two hub, I will be talking about and referring to Uranus and the planets it is exalted, in detriment and in the fall sign in. Thank You for reading my hub.
