Parents Facing Jail for taking kids on Holiday.
In UK, parents can either face a fine or face jail for taking their kids on holiday during Term Time.
Some parents do it because their kids have disabilities and can’t always go away when they have half term holidays and some parents prefer to take a weeks’ holiday in term time because the prices for going on holidays in the summer triple. Travel Agents / Airlines take advantage of the School holiday periods. Some parents have other reasons e.g Maybe they were only allowed certain dates to take holiday at work or someone in the family could be terminally ill and they want to spend time with them.
Usually, a parent has to apply to the Head Teacher to do this and on certain cases they are allowed. However, if not authorised, it becomes a problem.
"We don't care, we love holidays." :-)
The Penalty
I can understand a fine of £200+, but why put a parent in jail? I personally believe that if a Parent is in jail, it will affect the kids performance in School. Not only that, the kid(s) will feel so guilty because mummy or daddy was put in jail, for taking them on holiday and ofcourse, it will have a knock on effect on the health and welfare of the family.
I am curious to know how it works in other Countries. What penalties do you face if you take your child on holiday anytime or can you just take them on holiday when you want?
What is your opinion on how to deal with Parents, who take kids on holidays during Term Time?
