Hostess Twinkies

The Origin of Hostess Twinkies

Who doesn't remember eating Hostess Twinkie when they were a kid?
They've been around since 1930.

It was a man named James Alexander Dewar who worked for the Continental Baking Company that came up with the idea about the "Twinkies". He thought up the name Twinkies when he was in St. Louis and noticed a billboard advertising "Twinkle Toe Shoes".

He thought up of the idea when while working at Continental Baking Company, when he noticed that a few machines sat around when the strawberry season was done. These machines would fill strawberry shortcakes with strawberry cream.

He later developed, in Schiller Park, Illinois, a sponge cake filled with banana cream; called it the "Twinkie". For such an odd name back then, it totally fits this delicious snack cake.

Remember "Twinkie the Kid"?

One of the First To-Go

You remember Twinkie the Kid, don't you? Well, you may or may not remember, but I'm sure most of you do. How long has it been since you seen Twinkie the Kid with him twirling a lasso over his head? I mean, this guy was in commercials.

Twinkie The Kid saved Twinkie Town from a pair of bakery burglars, roping them in without letting the delicious loot hit the ground. His willingness to share treats made him popular with children. ~Huffpost,Com~

Looking back, a lot of iconic characters are disappearing off grocery store shelves. In some cases it's unfortunate, while some seem totally ridiculous.

Well, it seems Twinkie the Kid took a little time off between the years 1988 & 1990. He debuted in 1971 and became very popular (obviously, Twinkies are awesome). but he and his two side kicks Captain Cupcake and Fruit Pie the Magician just don't receive the attention they once had. In fact, Captain Cupcake and Fruit Pie the Magician don't receive ANY attention...it's like they just disappeared.

Unfortunately, when I looked for the whereabouts to Twinkie the Kid, I read that he passed away. He was 85.

Rest in Peace

THE DEEP FRIED TWINKIE

Something Magical Happens

Deep Fried Twinkies is a Popular State Fair Item Across the United States

Actually, it was the Texas State Fair that first introduced deep fried Twinkies.

James Alexander Dewar never would of thought of this. I believe the only reason the Deep Fried Banana came into existence because everybody was deep frying everything during the late eighties/early nineties - remember the deep fried turkey?

It was around the time when deep frying a turkey for Thanksgiving became popular (once again), is when the deep fried Twinkie was invented.

Unlike the turkey, you freeze the Twinkies before you deep fry them.
You NEVER deep fry a frozen turkey - ever.
You NEVER deep fry unfrozen Twinkies - ever.

Basic Instructions on How to Deep Fry Twinkies

  1. Freeze Twinkies overnight with wooden stick little less than halfway in Twinkies
  2. Turn Fryer at desired temperature *I recommend 375 degrees*
  3. Create the usual batter with milk, eggs and flour; create your own
  4. Deep fry the Twinkies with the wooden sticks up out of the oil until they are a light golden brown
  5. EXPERIMENT: Make your own creative recipe

As of right now, have you EVER tried Deep Fried Twinkies?

The Twinkie Comeback

Hostess Brands LLC

In July of 2012, Hostess Brand LLC (the maker of the Twinkie) had filed for bankruptcy...for a second time. But don't worry, the Twinkie is making a comeback.

According to a CNBC article I read, they reported that "JPMorgan says it's time to bet on Twinkies, makes Hostess Brands a top pick for 2021".

If that isn't good news, I don't know what is.
