Dehydration.

Dehydration can have a massive effect on our bodies. Keeping hydrated is very important, especially for children and elderly people. Our bodies are made up of over 70 percent water so it is necessary not to lose too much of our body fluid.

There are a number of effects which are caused by dehydration, some of which are not instantly recognised and could be diagnosed as other things. A simple test can be done by pinching the skin on the back of your hand to check the elasticity. If when you pinch it together and release the skin it returns to normal rest within a couple of seconds then you are hydrated. If it goes back down slowly or even stays pinched then there is a likelihood you are dehydrated.

The consequences of being dehydrated can be life threatening depending on why, in fact you are dehydrated. Prolonged exposure to the sun and intense heat will cause this as the picture in the desert illustrates. Illness can also cause us to lose body fluid, especially if you have had food poisoning or something has caused you to vomit for prolonged periods. This causes a loss of fluid and needs to be replenished quickly.

There are quite a number of indicators which could lead you or a medic to believe your body is dehydrated. Below you will find what is believed to be the top 10 causes of dehydration.

Thirst is probably the best indicator of dehydration. If you are thirsty, it is too late, you are most certainly already dehydrated.
