Is your purified water keeping you dehydrated?
Hydrating With Bottled Water
Bottled waters. spring water, mineral water, purified water, and distilled water are not all the same!
Bottled water can be very healthy....or not!
Most North American tap waters have pHs in the range of 7.0 to 7.4, which is half way between acidic and basic. Some popular purified waters have pH in the “4” range, worse than acid rainwater!
pHs under "7" are acidic. Some mineral waters have pHs as high as 9 or 10 which are ALKALINE, the opposite of acidic. Slightly more alkaline water tends to be "good" for hydration.
Mineral Water and Purified Water
Minerals yield the ions as the electrolytes causing the rise in water pH. Calcium, magnesium, and sodium are electrolytes in mineral water. Distilled water ia demineralized and has been shown to detrimental, over time, all things being equal Why?
Staying Hydrated or Becoming Dehydrated
The human body is 80% water and 90% of the US population is dehydrated. Why? For water to enter our cells, the cell has to “know” the water is accompanied by a “key” or the cell's “aquaporins” will not allow new water to enter the cell.
The "keys" are electrolytes or minerals in hydrating water. Water that cannot enter the cell stays outsidel the cell passing out of the body through renal aquaporin-6 channel proteins resulting in dehydration. People drinking purified water may be perpetually dehydrated where the body exists in a constant state prone to disease.
Therefore, some people may drink lots of water and still be dehydrated since their water lacks minerals needed to help in getting water into the cell, but since any water that does enter the cell is acidic this causes the cells to become acidic which leads to a disease state inside the cell. Now the body is dehydrated, acidic, and open to developing diseases.
Diseases of Dehydration
There are so many disease states from dehydration they are hard to list including everything from migrainees to arthritis. Dr. F. Batmanghelidj, at watercure.com says, people are not sick, but in fact they are actually thirsty, stating that even high blood pressure may simply be caused by being in a continual state of dehydration or not staying hydrated.
The doctor says adult onset (Type II) diabetes, is a complication of dehydration, which can lead to retinopathy, neuropathy, and gangrene.
Best Waters for Staying Hydrated
Mineral waters are healthy since they provide the magnesium, calcium, and trace minerals required to be in the best physiological state. Many people take calcium supplements for preventing osteoporosis, but unless there is sufficient magnesium around in the proper ratio to assist the calcium to be absorbed, the calcium will not be usefully deployed by the body.
Perrier, the French spring water, has especially high calcium content but since it does not contain enough magnesium for calcium to be absorbed there are reports of people having developed urinary tract infections from drinking six bottles per day or more of Perrier.
Magnesium Content in Mineral Water
The World Health Organization recommends at least 25 milligrams of magnesium per liter of water saying that heart disease can be reduced by up to 40 percent with sufficient dietary magnesium.
Adobe Springs Water from Stanislaus County, California, has over 100 milligrams of magnesium per liter, as well as good ratios of other minerals. Noah's California Spring Water uses Adobe Springs Water as a water source.
Haaretz reports that Netanyahu is considering supplementing Israeli water with magnesium with the thought that magnesium could lower heart disease as it is used in the body not only for calcium absorption, but also for muscle contraction, brain function, nerve function, and maintaining immunity.
States in the USA With High Tap Water Mineral Content
Some states in the continental US have substantial tap water mineral content. People can find out how their tap water stacks up when the water company mails out their routine analysis statement. A key message is that osteoporosis may be able to be reduced when there is sufficient mineral content in the water.
Regarding Bottled Water
If one plans on paying for bottled water, consider that purified waters may harm the body since the mineral content has been essentially reduced to zero, especially in distilled waters. Some large discount grocery stores have great prices on their purified or distilled waters, but one may be better off (and more healthy) drinking tap water.
Usually, plain tap water has a fairly neutral pH, which at least is not creating an acidic environment inside the body. For lovers of FIJI water, as it is sourced from the main island of FIJI, and it has flowed over lava, and picked up calcium and heathy trace minerals. The reason for FIJI water's smooth taste is that it has an alkaline pH of around 8 and contains lots of electrolytes for good health.
Remember to leave the purified water at the grocery store as it is not optimum for staying hydrated!
