Babies and fish

Fish is in the top 10 of allergenic foods and experts used to advise waiting until babies were passed the 12 month mark before introducing it. However, as with much advice surrounding allergenic food, this has been revised (as there was no evidence to prove that delaying their introduction prevented food allergies). Most paediatricians and health visitors will now advocate introducing fish - to most babies - as early as six months.

Fish is a great source of many vitamins and minerals and the NHS advises that we should all include at least two portions of fish a week in our diet. When it comes to tuna, there are some concerns about levels of mercury. The NHS advises that children can safely eat two portions a week. Fresh tuna counts as an oily fish, but tinned tuna does not.

This is a really easy to prepare dish, which is high in taste and is very nutritious. Most of all, babies and young toddlers love it.

It can be batch cooked and then frozen. Once prepared (or defrosted) it simply needs microwaving for three minutes.

  3. Stir in the mashed broccoli and potato and then add the drained tuna. Grate over the cheese and then microwave for three minutes.
